General

What is ShareTribe and why should I use it for my marketplace?

ShareTribe is purpose-built marketplace infrastructure that dramatically reduces your time-to-market. Unlike Shopify (designed for single-seller e-commerce) or WordPress (with plugin bloat and security risks), ShareTribe provides native support for:

  • Multi-vendor transactions and split payments via Stripe Connect
  • User verification and trust/safety features
  • Listing management with custom attributes
  • Built-in messaging between buyers and sellers
  • Flexible transaction processes (bookings, purchases, rentals)

Building these features from scratch typically costs $50,000-$100,000+ and takes 4-6 months. ShareTribe eliminates 60-80% of that foundational work, allowing us to focus your budget on the unique differentiators that will make your marketplace successful—whether that's a specialized booking flow, custom search algorithm, or unique trust mechanics.

We recommend ShareTribe for founders who want to validate their marketplace concept quickly without rebuilding proven infrastructure that every marketplace needs.

What types of marketplaces can you build on ShareTribe?

We build the full spectrum of marketplace types on ShareTribe:

  • Rental Marketplaces: Boats, equipment, vehicles, vacation homes, event spaces, camera gear—anything with availability calendars and booking windows.
  • Service Marketplaces: Professional services, freelancers, home services, healthcare providers, tutors—with hourly, project-based, or subscription pricing.
  • Product Marketplaces: Multi-vendor e-commerce, handmade goods, B2B wholesale—with inventory management and shipping integrations.
  • Lessons and Coaching: Tutoring, fitness, music lessons, business consulting—with scheduling, video integration, and recurring sessions.
  • Event and Experience Marketplaces: Tours, activities, workshops, ticketed events—with capacity management and date-based availability.
  • B2B Marketplaces: Equipment leasing, wholesale, with quotes, purchase orders, and tiered pricing based on volume or relationship.

Each marketplace type has specific transaction flows—hourly booking vs. daily rental vs. purchase vs. subscription—and we customize these to match how your specific category actually buys and sells.

Examples we've built: RareWaters (fishing experiences), Boat.rent (boat rentals), pool rentals, clinical training services, and Kidsy (kids gear marketplace).

What's the difference between ShareTribe's no-code builder and custom code?

ShareTribe offers two paths depending on your customization needs:

No-Code Builder (The New ShareTribe):

  • Configure categories, filters, and basic transaction settings through a visual console
  • Ideal when standard listing and payment flows fit your needs
  • Great for quick market validation before investing heavily
  • Typical investment: $0-3K for configuration and branding
  • Limitations: Cannot modify transaction processes, limited custom fields, standard search only

Custom Code (Developer Platform / Extend):

  • Full programmatic control over data models and search algorithms
  • Custom pricing logic and transaction processes
  • Complete front-end UI customization using React
  • Integration with external services (CRMs, identity verification, custom payments)
  • Required for mobile app development
  • Typical investment: $15K+ for complex zero-to-launch MVP builds

Our recommendation: Start with no-code configuration for initial validation. Once you've proven demand and identified exactly what custom features you need, invest in custom development. Many clients launch their first version for under $10K, then expand to custom builds once they have real user feedback.

During our discovery session, we'll review your specific feature requirements and recommend the right approach for your stage and budget.

How fast can we launch a ShareTribe marketplace?

Timeline depends on scope complexity and your team's decision-making speed:

Standard MVP (6-10 weeks):

  • Production-ready marketplace with your core transaction flow
  • Custom branding and UI refinements
  • Basic integrations (analytics, email, payments)
  • Weekly demos showing real progress

Simple Configuration (3-4 weeks):

  • Using mostly standard ShareTribe features
  • Minimal custom development
  • Fast decisions on copy and design
  • Well-defined scope from day one

Complex Builds (8-12+ weeks):

  • Extensive custom features or unique transaction flows
  • Multiple integrations (calendar sync, shipping, identity verification)
  • Native mobile app development
  • Migration from another platform with data transfer

What drives the timeline:

  • Number of custom features beyond ShareTribe defaults
  • Design complexity and iteration cycles
  • Third-party integration requirements
  • How quickly you can provide feedback and make decisions

We've delivered critical feature updates in as little as 8-9 days when scope was well-defined and decisions were fast. The key is clear requirements and responsive collaboration.

Every project includes weekly demos on a staging environment, so you see working software throughout—not just at the end.

Plans, Pricing, and Transactions

Which plan should I start with?
The plan table shows four tiers (Build, Lite, Pro, Extend) and what unlocks at each stage (custom domain on Pro, SSO on higher tiers, etc.). Pick the lowest tier that fits your launch needs; you can upgrade later.
What counts as a “transaction” on the pricing page?
Sharetribe bills additional usage “per initiated transaction.” Use that for cost modeling if you expect high inquiry volume.
Can I run staging and production?
Yes. Sharetribe gives you Test and (if you code) Dev, plus a Live environment when you launch. Treat Test like a preview of Live.

Payments, Payouts, and Money Flow

How do payments work?
Stripe Connect or similar gateways power marketplace payments and split payouts. You can connect multiple payment options for your customers.
Where can I pay out my providers?
Payout availability depends on your preferred payment provider's supported countries. Ask us to verify their API documents before you commit to a provider.
When do providers get paid?
Payout timing follows your transaction process. The default “Purchase” and “Booking” flows show when holds, captures, and releases happen.
Can I use a gateway other than Stripe?
Out of the box, Sharetribe is built around Stripe. You can remove Stripe and implement something else with custom code and a custom process.
Can I charge listing fees, membership fees, or subscriptions?
Yes. For listing fees and memberships, use your preferred payments gateway and automate approvals via Zapier. Commission and minimum-commission logic is configurable. Subscriptions to sellers are possible with custom flows.
